Patti and I bought a small piece of property in Greenwood County, Kansas in October of 2020.  With everything that we are experiencing in 2020, covid, the election, civil unrest, isolation,  etc. we were looking for a place to recharge, to gain strength, to escape.  It is 30 acres of mixed grass pasture tucked into the eastern edge of the Flint Hills just south of Hamilton, Kansas.  The vision is part farm, part campsite.

This site will chronicle our journey.

We named it QUERENCIA - the place where one’s strength is drawn from; where one feels at home; the place where you are your most authentic self.   The idea is a metaphysical one, borrowed from the Spanish.

Ernest Hemingway's Death in the Afternoon (1932) describes the querencia as the "place the bull naturally wants to go to in the ring, a preferred locality… It is a place which develops in the course of the fight where the bull makes his home. It does not usually show at once, but develops in his brain as the fight goes on. In this place he feels that he has his back against the wall and in his querencia he is inestimably more dangerous and almost impossible to kill."
